A continuation to my “Food to Boost your Mood” series, we are at our last stop. This time I’ll introduce three items that will surely send you to a cloud nine of happiness.
First up, bananas are full of potassium, but what you may not know is that they also contain tryptophan, a brain chemical that helps to regulate mood, according to Ara DerMarderosian, University of the Sciences. Bananas are also a good source of B vitamin folate, and having low levels of the vitamin has been linked to depression. Another would be chocolate. Dark chocolate is a good source of antioxidants, but it’s also been found to reduce the stress hormone cortisol, according to a study in the Journal of Proteome Research. Last of the Healthy Trio is peanuts. According to a study by the United States Department of Agriculture, low magnesium levels are linked to lower energy. Chomp on magnesium rich foods, like beans and nuts, to make sure you don’t fizzle out too quickly each day.

8 oz. dark chocolate, chopped
2 bananas, peeled and cut crosswise into thirds
1/3 c coarsely chopped salted peanuts
- Place chocolate in the heatproof bowl set over a pan of gently simmering water. Stir until melted.
- Line a baking sheet with a waxed paper. Dip banana, one piece at a time, in chocolate, spooning on additional chocolate to cover.
- Sprinkle each banana with peanuts, and refrigerate until chocolate is firm.
